Dear Mr.Crowe:-

RECO

February 99, MAR 12,

139

I beg to own receipt of your esteemed favour

of the 7th instant in respect of the British Cigarette

Company's trade mark "Quaisin" and "Farmer Boy".

I am sending you herewith enclosed a facsimile

each of the above two marks.

The application for registration of the marks

were filed on October 12th last and soon after that I

was called upon by the Patent Office to withdraw the

same on the ground that the Anglo-Japanese Treaty which

came into force on July 17th last does not cover any

British colonies, therefore that no British subject, a

natural person or corporation, can invoke the protection

of the Patent, Trade Mark &c., laws in Japan.

Then the applications were sent back on

November 2nd last.

In consequence of the above difficulty the same

marks were taken over by the British American Tobacco

Company, which is the sister company of the British

Cigarette, and the latter applied for registration

thereof
